Sports Medicine Architecture & Interiors Photography Project - Scottsdale, AZ
Finalist, Healthcare category, AZRE 2024 RED Awards
-
This sports medicine architecture and interiors photography project for HKS Architects involved business travel to Scottsdale and remote coordination with the HKS photography team prior to arrival. On set, I met with the designers to plan and execute morning, daytime, and twilight captures, ensuring a comprehensive visual narrative of the facility. The shoot included securing FAA clearance for drone operations and integrating aerial perspectives with ground-based imagery. Working in a fully operational medical environment, I collaborated with staff and designers serving as models to convey the functionality and human-centered design of the space. Particular attention was given to highlighting the design intent—seamlessly connecting the natural exterior environment with the interior through native Arizona landscaping and stonework.

Photographing in an active medical facility required careful planning to respect patient privacy and comply with HIPAA regulations. This included staging areas strategically, timing shots to avoid patient activity, and minimizing our footprint in sensitive spaces. Coordinating staff and designers to serve as models added complexity to the schedule, while also ensuring the imagery reflected both the functional and human-centered aspects of the design. Securing FAA clearance for drone operations in a controlled airspace and aligning aerial captures with ground-based photography required precise timing.
